JPYC Co. restored issuance reservations for its yen stablecoin on Ethereum on September 17, the same day the token debuted on South Korea’s Upbit and briefly traded at more than triple its reference price. Polygon reservations remain offline.

Key Takeaways

  • JPYC Co. suspended and then restored the issuance-reservation step on Ethereum, the process users need to mint tokens.
  • Polygon reservations stayed down after the Ethereum fix, leaving users there unable to create fresh JPYC.
  • Upbit listed JPYC the same day, the first time a yen-pegged stablecoin has traded in South Korea.
  • The token touched 27.2 won at the open, against the 8.81 won global reference price Upbit cited.
  • JPYC Co. has not named a cause and said it would share details as the investigation progressed.

What We Know?

JPYC Co. posted a sequence of service notices to its official X account through the day. The issuer first flagged that Ethereum issuance reservations were suspended while it investigated, then published a matching notice for Polygon. Only the Ethereum function is working again.

Issuance reservation is the step where a user requests newly minted JPYC before tokens are issued against yen held in reserve. Pausing it stops new supply from entering the affected network. Tokens already in circulation keep moving, so the failure is narrower than a depeg.

Holders on Polygon can check the issuer’s notices before attempting a reservation. No notice flagged any effect on transfers or existing balances. JPYC Co. apologized in each one.

What We Don’t Know?

The notices establish that the reservation step failed and that Ethereum recovered first. They do not establish why. Four questions stay open:

  • What caused the reservation function to fail on two networks at once?
  • Why Ethereum came back while Polygon did not?
  • Whether listing-day demand played any part in the failure?
  • When Polygon reservations return?

Upbit Debut Runs Through Ethereum Alone

The Korean listing leans on one chain. Upbit accepts JPYC deposits and withdrawals over Ethereum only, though the token also circulates on Polygon, Kaia and Avalanche, so the network that broke first is the one Korean demand must route through. Debut pricing showed how thin that channel is: JPYC reached 27.2 won before easing into the 23-won range, against an 8.81 won reference.

Supply is moving the other way at home. Total JPYC stood near 1.9 billion tokens, down from about 1.92 billion a day earlier, extending a slide that began in late August, mostly on Kaia. CEO Noritaka Okabe has said the 1 million yen (about $6,400) issuance and redemption cap applying inside Japan does not apply to overseas exchanges.

The Bottom Line

The outage exposes a concentration problem rather than a solvency one. JPYC launched in October 2025 as Japan’s first stablecoin registered under the country’s fund-transfer licensing rules, backed one-to-one by yen deposits and Japanese government bonds. Japan’s crypto financial products law covers that backing. It says little about the plumbing that delivers it. A minting pipeline that stalls the day foreign demand arrives is an operational limit, and the multi-chain spread that might have absorbed it could not, because the venue driving demand speaks only Ethereum.

That gap matters more as yen stablecoins move offshore. Korean buyers reached a Japanese instrument through a domestic exchange while South Korea’s own stablecoin rules stay unfinished, and the spread between Upbit and the global reference had no arbitrage channel wide enough to close it quickly. The home supply trend says the same from the other end: circulation is shrinking in Japan while a new market prices the token at triple.

Definition of Stablecoin. Link to full glossary entry follows the description.Stablecoin

A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency tied to a reserve asset like the US dollar, designed to maintain a stable value for trading, payments, and transfers.
