AZ-COM Maruwa Holdings, a Tokyo-listed logistics firm that delivers for Amazon Japan, plans to pay around 2,300 business partners in the yen-pegged JPYC stablecoin, Nikkei Asia reported July 19, 2026. The move would mark Japan’s first large-scale corporate use of a stablecoin in day-to-day operations.

Key Takeaways

  • AZ-COM Maruwa Holdings will pay about 2,300 subcontractors and independent truck drivers in the JPYC stablecoin instead of standard bank transfers.
  • The logistics firm has delivered for Amazon Japan since 2017 and posted 230.5 billion yen ($1.4 billion) in revenue for the year ended March.
  • JPYC’s onchain circulation has surpassed 2 billion yen, and the company is weighing a 1 billion yen investment in the token.
  • Japan’s Financial Services Agency approved JPYC as the country’s first legally approved yen stablecoin, backed by an AML framework from compliance firm Elliptic.
  • Convenience store chain Lawson will pilot JPYC payments at its Takanawa Gateway City store from early August, about a week before AZ-COM Maruwa’s plan surfaced.

What Happened?

AZ-COM Maruwa Holdings (formerly Maruwa Unyu Kikan) will introduce JPYC for payments such as outsourcing fees to its 2,300-partner network, including subcontractors and independent truck drivers, according to Nikkei Asia.

Nikkei Asia said AZ-COM Maruwa is weighing the move even as volumes stay subdued in a lingering bear market. The Tokyo-listed firm, traded as TSE:9090, has provided delivery services for Amazon Japan since 2017 and reported 230.5 billion yen ($1.4 billion) in revenue for the fiscal year ended March.

The logistics firm is betting that near-instant, fee-less conversions to yen will make contracting work more attractive to drivers navigating Japan’s labor shortages, an aging workforce and stricter overtime regulations.

JPYC’s Regulatory Backing

Elliptic, the blockchain analytics and AML compliance firm that screens JPYC’s transactions, said Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA), the country’s integrated financial regulator, granted JPYC approval to launch the country’s first domestic fiat-pegged digital currency following a regulatory framework introduced last year.

JPYC has met stringent regulatory requirements to be the first stablecoin provider, with its compliance framework supported by Elliptic’s AML solutions suite. The token, issued by Tokyo-based fintech firm JPYC Inc. and pegged 1:1 to the yen, is 100% backed by bank deposits and Japanese government bonds rather than by the issuer’s own credit.

Noritaka Okabe, CEO of JPYC Inc said:

“

We are greatly encouraged to have adopted Elliptic’s world-class AML solution for the issuance of JPYC, Japan’s first yen-pegged stablecoin under the Money Transfer Business Act.

Elliptic said JPYC plans to distribute the stablecoin through bank transfers, allowing both individuals and firms to receive tokens in digital wallets after purchase, with additional use cases spanning international remittances, corporate payments and DeFi.

Implications for Japan’s Stablecoin Push

AZ-COM Maruwa’s plan lands about a week after Nikkei Asia reported that convenience store chain Lawson will pilot JPYC payments at its Takanawa Gateway City store in Tokyo from early August. The two events trace a fast retail-to-corporate adoption arc.

The scale of AZ-COM Maruwa’s plan stands out against JPYC’s own balance sheet. A planned 1 billion yen JPYC investment would equal roughly half of the token’s entire 2 billion yen onchain circulation, meaning a single corporate buyer could reshape the whole float on its own.

That concentration only works inside a licensed structure. JPYC’s Payment Services Act registration and its bank deposit and JGB backing form the regulatory moat that lets a listed logistics operator treat the token as ordinary payroll cash. That same pattern shows up in the country-level adoption data cited above, where regulated, bank anchored stablecoins increasingly outpace offshore alternatives in jurisdictions with clear licensing regimes, echoing the settlement use cases already visible in decentralized finance activity.

CoinLaw’s Takeaway

This reads as a sequencing story. A stablecoin only becomes payroll infrastructure once payees trust the peg, the issuer, and the exit into yen, and JPYC’s FSA license plus its full reserve backing supplies exactly that trust for AZ-COM Maruwa’s independent contractors. Those drivers are choosing a faster, fee-free settlement rail over a bank transfer that can take days to clear.

For AZ-COM Maruwa, the appeal is speed and cost. JPYC settles in minutes rather than the days a correspondent bank transfer can take, without per transaction fees, an advantage that compounds across its 2,300 payees.

The bigger signal is where regulated stablecoins land first in Japan. JPYC is moving into blue collar payroll and convenience store checkout before it reaches trading desks, the reverse of how dollar stablecoins scaled through exchanges. That licensing model could grow the circulation figure quickly from one more corporate commitment like this.
