Cboe keeps SPX exclusive for another quarter century
S&P Dow Jones Indices, a division of S&P Global (NYSE: SPGI), owns the S&P 500. Cboe operates the only market where SPX options trade, and the joint announcement keeps that split in place for the full new term. Cboe opened the world’s first listed options exchange in 1973.
The volume explains why the renewal matters to Cboe. SPX options set a record annual volume of 970.6 million contracts in 2025, Cboe said, with average daily volume of 3.9 million contracts. The company called that a 25% increase over the prior year and the fourth straight year of record trading.

Cboe’s cautionary statement in the release names one risk first among the factors that could hurt results. That risk is losing its right to exclusively list and trade certain index options and futures. For its busiest index product, that risk now sits a generation away.
Craig Donohue, Cboe’s chief executive, said the extension lets the exchange keep growing its SPX and VIX franchises while giving customers continuity. He added that it gives Cboe “significant runway to pursue the next frontier of innovation.” Catherine Clay, who runs S&P DJI, called the S&P 500 the most widely tracked index in the world.
Tokenized options enter the license
The second clause is the one crypto markets will read closely. Cboe and S&P DJI may collaborate on innovation beyond traditional index derivatives, and the release lists tokenized options contracts among possible new products. Neither company said how such a contract would be built, where it would settle or who could trade it.
Clay tied the deal to access. She said investor demand for U.S. equity exposure keeps accelerating. She also described a future where investors reach the benchmark in whatever format suits them best. A tokenized SPX contract would fit that description, though the release commits neither side to more than the option to work on one.
That leaves four open questions the announcement doesn’t answer:
- Which blockchain or trading venue would host a tokenized SPX contract?
- Would it resemble crypto derivatives traded onchain, or stay inside Cboe’s listed options market?
- Which regulator would review it, and under what product category?
- What did either company pay or receive for the 25-year term?
Why It Matters?
Traders who already hold SPX or VIX positions face no contract changes described in the release, and SPX options keep trading on Cboe alone.
The extension buys Cboe certainty on its flagship product and hands both firms a tokenization option they haven’t exercised yet. Until one of them files or announces a tokenized contract, the only fixed date in the deal is the end of the term: 2051.
