BitGo confirmed on August 4, 2026 that it selected Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) as the exclusive bridge for its $7.3 billion Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) token, replacing LayerZero.

Key Takeaways

  • BitGo named Chainlink CCIP the exclusive cross-chain provider for its $7.3 billion WBTC token, replacing LayerZero.
  • The switch pushes total announced LayerZero-to-Chainlink CCIP migrations to roughly $14.6 billion industry-wide.
  • BitGo said the new setup lets it retain direct control over WBTC’s token contracts, transfer limits and cross-chain settings.
  • The move follows the $292 million Kelp DAO bridge exploit and joins Mantle, Lombard, Aave and Kraken in leaving LayerZero.
  • Coinbase struck a comparable exclusive Chainlink CCIP arrangement for its own wrapped Bitcoin product, cbBTC.

What Happened?

BitGo, a digital asset custody and infrastructure company, has selected Chainlink CCIP as the exclusive cross-chain provider for Wrapped Bitcoin, replacing LayerZero. The switch standardizes WBTC deployments around Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Token (CCT) standard and makes CCIP the default for future digital assets BitGo issues.

the design allows it to retain direct control over token contracts, transfer limits and other operational settings rather than delegating those functions to an outside bridge provider, BitGo said of the new arrangement.

WBTC carries a market capitalization of about $7.4 billion, according to CoinMarketCap, making it the largest tokenized version of Bitcoin and one of the most widely used assets across decentralized finance applications outside the Bitcoin network itself. Chainlink’s directory already lists CCIP enabled WBTC pools live on Ethereum and Ronin, though neither company has published a timeline for completing the migration across every supported network.

Why BitGo Dropped LayerZero?

The switch follows a wave of similar moves triggered by the $292 million exploit of Kelp DAO’s LayerZero powered bridge earlier this year. Mantle, Lombard, Aave and Kraken had already announced plans to move their own cross-chain infrastructure from LayerZero to Chainlink CCIP before BitGo’s announcement. With BitGo’s $7.3 billion WBTC deployment added to the tally, the other announced migrations account for roughly $7.3 billion of the combined total on their own.

Bridge exploits remain among the costliest categories of crypto loss. Before the switch, BitGo had adopted LayerZero in 2024 to expand WBTC onto Avalanche and BNB Chain, requiring each transfer to clear approval from BitGo’s own verifier plus either LayerZero or Polyhedra.

Wrapped Bitcoin’s Bridge Consolidation

BitGo’s move is not isolated. Coinbase reached a comparable exclusive arrangement with Chainlink for its own wrapped Bitcoin product, cbBTC, meaning two of the largest wrapped-Bitcoin tokens on the market now depend on the same bridge infrastructure. Chainlink’s CCIP uses lock/release and burn/mint mechanisms to move tokens between blockchain networks.

The consolidation streamlines technical infrastructure and improves operational efficiency, but it also concentrates risk within one protocol provider. As institutional demand grows, a shrinking set of infrastructure providers ends up holding the keys for a widening share of the market.

BitGo’s Broader Institutional Push

The WBTC migration lands amid a run of BitGo product launches. Earlier this week, the company introduced BitGo Link, a treasury management platform that lets institutional clients monitor balances and move assets across custody accounts and connected exchanges from a single dashboard. In July, BitGo launched four quantum risk management tools for Bitcoin multisignature wallets, including a Quantum Risk Score and an exposed-address remediation workflow. Earlier this year, the company also expanded controlled custody access to DeFi protocols including Aave, Spark and Tesseract.

Each move keeps a different layer of infrastructure in-house while outsourcing narrower technical functions. The WBTC bridge switch fits that same pattern. BitGo hands the cross-chain messaging layer to Chainlink while keeping token contract and transfer-limit control for itself.

CoinLaw’s Takeaway

Moving $7.3 billion in WBTC to a new bridge reads as a sequencing move, not a reaction to a BitGo failure. The market’s tolerance for bridge risk narrowed after the Kelp DAO exploit, and the CCT standard lets BitGo consolidate assets under one interoperability layer while keeping the keys to contracts and transfer limits. Paired with Coinbase’s Chainlink deal for cbBTC, two of the largest wrapped-Bitcoin products now share one bridge dependency, raising the stakes of a future CCIP incident even as it lowers the odds of a LayerZero repeat.

This summer’s run of launches, the treasury dashboard, the quantum risk tools, the DeFi custody expansion, reads as BitGo building toward becoming the operational layer institutions route capital through, not just the vault they store it in. That strategy’s payoff depends on whether BitGo can keep expanding without creating new single points of failure.
