BitMEX will close its exchange on September 23, 2026, at 04:00:00 UTC. The derivatives platform halted new account registrations immediately after a board-level strategic review.

Key Takeaways

  • BitMEX will fully close on September 23, 2026, at 04:00:00 UTC, ending its run as the exchange that invented the 100x leverage perpetual swap.
  • New account registrations stopped immediately, and risk limits begin on August 26, 2026, forcing reduce-only trading ahead of the shutdown.
  • Users who fail to withdraw by the Closure Time face a fee of USD50 or 1% per annum, whichever is greater, charged monthly on remaining balances.
  • BitMEX co-founders Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo and Samuel Reed pleaded guilty in 2022 to Bank Secrecy Act violations, a case later pardoned by President Donald Trump.
  • BitMEX had more than 2 million traders on its platform as bitcoin traded near $65,676, down almost 50% from its October peak.

BitMEX Confirms September Closure After 11-Year Run

The exchange confirmed the shutdown, according to BitMEX’s own closure announcement: With immediate effect, we have stopped all new account registrations. The decision came after the board of HDR Global Trading Limited, BitMEX’s owner and operator, reviewed the business and the broader crypto industry. The shutdown takes effect at the company’s designated Closure Time, 04:00:00 UTC.

BitMEX was founded in 2014 and says it has experienced zero funds lost to hacks during its entire operating history of over 11 years. The exchange counted more than 2 million traders on its platform at the time of the announcement.

Dear BitMEX Users,

Today, we share with a very heavy heart that BitMEX exchange will shut down its operations, effective 23 September 2026 at 04:00:00 UTC.

The Wind-Down Timeline: What BitMEX Users Face

BitMEX will apply risk limits ahead of the Closure Time, restricting users to reduce only trading and will force close any positions still open at the Closure Time to ensure an orderly wind down. All staked BMEX Tokens have already been unstaked and are immediately available in holder accounts.

MilestoneWhat Happens
July 23, 2026Closure announced; new account registrations stop
August 26, 2026, 04:00 UTCRisk limits applied; trading becomes reduce only
September 23, 2026, 04:00 UTCClosure Time; remaining open positions force closed

Users who fail to withdraw their assets by the Closure Time will be charged an account fee of USD 50 equivalent or 1% per annum, whichever is greater, charged monthly on the remaining balance. Accounts remain accessible to view balances and transaction history and to withdraw funds even after the Closure Time.

From BSA Guilty Pleas to a Presidential Pardon

BitMEX’s co-founders Benjamin Delo, Arthur Hayes and Samuel Reed pleaded guilty in 2022 to failing to implement a Bank Secrecy Act compliant anti-money laundering program. Prosecutors accused the founders of willfully violating the Bank Secrecy Act between 2015 and 2020 by failing to adopt anti-money laundering and know-your-customer programs.

President Donald Trump pardoned the three founders last year, part of his administration’s policy of looser regulation on crypto. BitMEX is closing well after its own legal exposure was cleared, not because of it.

Implications for Crypto Derivatives

Bitcoin was trading near $65,676 at the time of the announcement, down almost 50% from its all-time high of $126,223.18 set in October. The closure comes amid struggling crypto prices, with bitcoin surrendering most of its gains from last year after Trump was elected to a second term as US president.

The exchange that invented the 100x leverage perpetual swap is exiting just as that product became the default across the crypto exchange market venues that grew up in its shadow.

CoinLaw’s Takeaway

BitMEX’s closure reads as a strategic retreat, not a regulatory casualty. Its founders cleared their highest profile legal risk once pardoned, yet the board wound the exchange down anyway, suggesting looser federal crypto policy did not translate into a rescue for a platform now competing against venues that copied its own leveraged perpetual model, even as bitcoin itself sits nearly 50% below its October high. For account holders, the reduce-only deadline matters more than the Closure Time headline, since positions left open after that point face forced liquidation.

An exchange that became a marquee Bank Secrecy Act enforcement target is shutting down at the same moment federal policy has turned friendlier to crypto operators. That points to a business decision, not regulatory pressure. The monthly dormancy fee turns inaction into a recurring cost for anyone still holding a balance on the platform.
