BitMart began an orderly wind-down of its cryptocurrency exchange on July 26, 2026, halting new registrations, deposits, and trading positions. The platform will end all trading services in one month and fully terminate operations by early 2027.

Key Takeaways

  • BitMart stopped new registrations, deposits, and trading positions at 01:30 UTC, starting a phased shutdown of its exchange.
  • The exchange will end all trading on August 26, 2026, and fully close by January 31, 2027, per BitMart’s published timeline.
  • BMX, BitMart’s platform token, crashed around 63%, with a decline near 64.9% per BitMart’s own market page.
  • BMX’s market cap fell from more than $100 million to about $55.6 million over the week, per CoinGecko, even as its 24-hour price crash ran deeper at 63%. The cap slide lagged the sharper price move, hinting the sell-off accelerated right at the announcement.
  • BitMart named no insolvency, breach, or regulator order, per BitMart’s notice. It pointed only to shifting “operating conditions” and future strategy.

What Happened?

BitMart’s own timeline gives users a 31-day runway before trading stops, per BitMart’s published schedule, against a stretch roughly six times longer before the platform shuts for good. That shorter window is the deadline that actually matters, not the longer platform afterlife that follows it. BitMart said the decision followed a careful evaluation of the Company’s operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction in its official shutdown notice.

Under the published timeline, BitMart suspended registrations and deposits and halted new trading positions at 01:30 UTC that day, with futures accounts entering reduce-only mode. All trading services will end at 01:00 UTC on August 26, 2026, and the platform will fully terminate at 15:59 UTC on January 31, 2027. Traders comparing this shutdown against the wider Crypto Exchange Market Data can see how the closure removes one more mid-tier venue from an already consolidating field.

BitMart told users to close open positions and complete identity verification before trading ends, and to submit withdrawal requests within a few hours after that. The notice added that certain withdrawal requests may face further review, including KYC checks, address validation, and sanctions screening, and that processing may be delayed by high volume or network congestion.

BMX Token Crashes as Trading Winds Down

BitMart’s platform token BMX fell sharply within hours of the notice. BMX dropped by around 63% in the 24 hours surrounding the announcement, with BitMart’s own market page at one point showing a decline of about 64.9%. CoinGecko placed the token near $0.164, with about $6.1 million in daily trading volume.

The token’s market capitalization tracked the same slide. BMX’s market value fell to about $55.6 million, down from more than $100 million earlier in the week, according to CoinGecko. BMX’s value depended on the exchange’s fee discounts, so the token had little reason to hold its price once that exchange announced its closure.

The exchange did not state that it had entered insolvency, and it did not connect the decision to a security incident, regulatory order, or lack of customer assets. That distinction matters against past crypto exchange hacks coverage, where most failures trace to a breach or a forced liquidation, not a scheduled wind-down like this one.

A Third Exchange Exit This Week

BitMart is not the only trading venue closing its doors. The announcement landed three days after BitMEX said it would close its derivatives exchange following a strategic review, and a similar window before Odos said it would wind down its decentralized-exchange aggregator. The parallel BitMEX exchange closure followed a similar shape, with registrations paused before the exchange set a hard cutoff for new positions.

The closure also revives an old wound. BitMart entered the market in 2017, and a Series B round led by Alexander Capital Ventures later valued the company at more than $300 million. Days after that funding round, attackers compromised two hot wallets and stole assets BitMart valued at about $150 million, while outside estimates reached $196 million.

The shutdown notice did not link the wind-down to that breach, which happened nearly five years earlier.

In May 2026, BitMart said “all platform operations are running normally” while responding to online concerns about withdrawals and risk controls, and said it planned to publish proof of reserves after completing security preparations. That reassurance landed roughly ten weeks before the shutdown, with no reserves report or explanation ever published.

CoinLaw’s Takeaway

BitMart’s notice reads as a sequencing problem, not a solvency crisis: no breach, no regulator order, no stated shortfall, just shifting “operating conditions” and a long exit ramp.

The timing lines up with BitMEX and Odos closing in the same stretch, which points to a broader thinning of the mid-tier exchange field rather than a BitMart-specific failure. Platform tokens tied to fee discounts carry a structural risk: once the exchange stops running, the token’s core utility disappears with it. Users still holding balances on BitMart have a defined, dated process to follow rather than an open ended wait, and that process is the detail worth tracking through the deadlines above.
