On August 7, 2026, Wintermute USA registered as a broker-dealer with the Securities and Exchange Commission and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, giving the crypto liquidity firm a regulated US trading vehicle.

Key Takeaways

  • Wintermute USA can provide liquidity to national securities exchanges and over-the-counter counterparties for its own account.
  • The registration permits proprietary trading in US equities, equity options and exchange-traded products, including digital-asset products.
  • Wintermute said its global group handles over $10 billion in average daily trading volume across more than 60 venues.
  • Wintermute USA is headquartered in New York and operates with a dedicated local team, the company said.

What Happened?

Wintermute, an algorithmic trading firm and digital-asset over-the-counter desk, said in its August 7 release that its New York-based affiliate Wintermute USA LLC is now a registered broker-dealer and FINRA member. The firm will operate as a regulated proprietary trading business, meaning the stated permissions apply solely to its own account rather than a customer-brokerage offering.

The registration lets Wintermute USA trade traditional equities and equity options and provide liquidity to national exchanges and OTC counterparties. It may also act as an authorized participant for exchange-traded products and self clear digital asset securities transactions for itself. An authorized participant is one of the specialist firms that can create and redeem ETF shares, a role that helps keep an ETF’s market price aligned with its underlying holdings.

“Digital assets and traditional finance will continue to develop in parallel, intersect in new ways, and ultimately integrate more deeply,” said Evgeny Gaevoy, Wintermute’s founder and chief executive. The company described the launch as part of its institutional expansion and its positioning for tokenized securities.

The Registration Opens a Narrower Door Than a Full Brokerage

Wintermute’s announcement defines the US entity as a proprietary trader focused on ETP services. That distinction matters. The registration gives the firm a regulated route to participate in market-making infrastructure, but the release does not describe retail brokerage, custody for outside clients, or a blanket approval to conduct every securities-business activity.

The immediate significance is operational rather than symbolic: a firm that built its business around crypto venues can now pursue regulated liquidity roles in US listed products. That creates a possible bridge between the trading technology used in digital assets and the compliance, capital and exchange-membership framework that governs US securities markets.

Wintermute Brings Crypto-Market Scale Into a Regulated Setting

Wintermute said its global group facilitates more than $10 billion in average daily trading volume and supplies liquidity across more than 60 centralized and decentralized exchanges. The US affiliate’s launch reflects the company’s continued investment in the United States and engagement with regulators and policymakers, according to the release.

The company’s cross-venue experience is relevant, but it does not eliminate the separate operational standards of US securities trading. Broker-dealer registration is one part of the route. Exchange memberships, product-specific permissions and the ability to manage inventory risk are distinct tests.

CoinLaw’s Takeaway

Wintermute’s registration is a starting point, not evidence that it has matched established US market makers. The regulated entity can trade and supply liquidity for its own account, while the roles that would place it at the center of exchange trading still depend on additional permissions and execution.

The more durable shift is that crypto-native liquidity firms are seeking the same legal and operational rails that support ETFs and listed securities. Wintermute’s next test will be whether its experience on dozens of crypto venues can translate into regulated US markets, where market-making scale depends on capital, exchange access and long-standing issuer relationships.
