Kraken Mesh Universal Crypto Transfers

Kraken this week began letting customers fund their accounts directly from a rival exchange, cutting the wallet address step out of crypto deposits. Coinbase is the first supported source platform.

The Big Picture

  • Kraken customers can now deposit crypto straight from another exchange account, skipping the copy and paste address step.
  • Mesh, a crypto payments network, handles the connection and the sign-in, working much the way Plaid does for bank accounts.
  • SmartFunding can convert about 3,000 USDC worth of other holdings to complete a 10,000 USDC deposit backed by 7,000 USDC.
  • Coinbase is the sole supported source exchange at launch, and the option is live on Kraken’s website but not its mobile app.
  • Kraken charges no fee for the transfer, though the sending exchange may still apply withdrawal, network, or conversion charges.

Kraken opens deposits from a rival exchange

The new option appears after a customer picks an asset and network on the deposit screen. Alongside the standard deposit address and QR code, an “Another exchange” choice now opens a secure Mesh window where the customer selects the platform holding their funds, signs in, sets an amount, and confirms.

The money still travels on-chain. Kraken said the crypto “is sent on-chain straight to your Kraken deposit address and credited the same way any other crypto deposit is,” so the transfer carries the same network cost any withdrawal would. Kraken charges nothing for the feature itself, and the sending platform’s own withdrawal and network fees still apply.

Mesh sits in the middle as the connection layer, the role played in bank data by Plaid. Kraken said in its announcement that “We never see or store your password for that other platform,” and noted that some platforms, including Coinbase, open their own login window during the process.

Copying wallet addresses is over.

You can now deposit crypto to Kraken directly from another exchange, without copying and pasting an address.

Powered by @meshpay. Supports Coinbase at launch, with more exchanges coming soon.

How SmartFunding covers a shortfall?

SmartFunding is the piece most likely to change user behavior, because it fills the gap when someone asks to move more of a token than they actually hold. Kraken’s stated example takes a customer who wants to deposit 10,000 USDC while holding 7,000 USDC: Mesh can convert about 3,000 USDC worth of other assets on that exchange to cover the difference, inside the same confirmation step.

Those top-ups are trades. That exchange’s trading, network, or conversion fees apply to the converted portion, and the announcement does not say how the conversion rate or any slippage is shown to a user before they confirm. USDC is the token in Kraken’s example, and stablecoins carry a large share of the inter-exchange flow measured in stablecoin market data.

Anyone planning to use the flow can check the sending exchange’s withdrawal and network fee schedule first, then review which assets SmartFunding proposes to sell before confirming. Closing or canceling the Mesh window starts no transfer, per Kraken’s description of the flow.

What the launch does not cover yet?

The announcement establishes that the flow works with Coinbase, that the user authenticates on the sending platform, and that the standard address method stays available. It does not establish anything about coverage beyond that. Kraken named no second exchange and gave no timeline.

Open items the company left unanswered:

  • Which exchanges follow Coinbase, and on what schedule?
  • When the option reaches Kraken’s mobile apps beyond “coming soon.”?
  • Which countries can use the Coinbase connection, given the local availability caveat?
  • How SmartFunding prices a conversion and what slippage a customer may absorb?

Deposit addresses and QR codes remain in place for every unsupported platform, so the existing path was not removed. Exchange-held balances stay the practical starting point for most retail transfers.

Why It Matters?

Address errors are the one deposit mistake with no recovery path, and exchanges have spent years papering over that with warnings, whitelists, and test transactions. Routing a deposit through an authenticated session hands address handling to software and takes the customer’s typing out of the equation. Manual address entry sits alongside the failure modes catalogued in crypto exchange security incident data, and removing a manual step addresses that class of loss directly.

The competitive angle is the sharper one. A deposit flow that signs into Coinbase to pull funds toward Kraken treats a competitor’s balance sheet as a funding source, which explains why connectivity layers such as Mesh usually reach challengers before incumbents. The open question the rollout will answer is whether the platforms on the sending side keep those connections available once the volume starts moving consistently in one direction.
