Moneygram Launches Stablecoin Backed Visa Card In Colombia

MoneyGram launched a stablecoin-backed card on 10th September, 2026 that lets customers in Colombia keep money they receive as a stable-dollar balance and spend it anywhere Visa is accepted.

The Big Picture

  • MoneyGram’s new card is live in Colombia first, with more global markets planned over the coming months.
  • MoneyGram says it serves over 60 million active customers across more than 200 countries and territories.
  • Rain supplies the card infrastructure and Crossmint supplies the wallet, while the card runs on the Stellar network.
  • A physical card with ATM withdrawals is planned for late 2026, according to the company.

MoneyGram Turns Its App Into a Spending Account

The MoneyGram Card lives inside the same app customers already use to receive transfers. Sign up takes a few taps, and active app users don’t need to leave the MoneyGram experience to start spending, since balance and card activity sit in one place. MoneyGram pitches the card to eligible customers worldwide, though Colombia is the only live market today.

Spending works the way most digital cards do. Customers can add the card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet to tap to pay in stores or check out faster online. Cash takes a different route: a customer sends funds from the MoneyGram balance to themselves and picks up local currency at a nearby MoneyGram location.

“We’re giving customers more freedom and control to manage their money, all in one place,” Anthony Soohoo, MoneyGram’s Chairman and CEO, said in the company’s announcement. The card follows MoneyGram’s cash payout rollout on Solana, which also connected digital assets to its retail counters.

Meet the MoneyGram Card.

Rain, Crossmint and Stellar Build the Plumbing

MoneyGram developed the card with Rain, which describes itself as enterprise-grade infrastructure for stablecoin-powered payments. Rain’s card infrastructure pairs with Crossmint’s wallet capabilities, and the Stellar network gives customers immediate access to their funds. For customers, that stack stays out of sight behind a normal Visa card in a phone wallet.

The planned physical card goes after a specific gap. MoneyGram says it will let customers withdraw cash at ATMs and make in-person purchases in places where digital cards may not be as widely accepted. Visa, whose network carries the card, recently added stablecoin payouts to Visa Direct, so both companies are now routing stablecoins toward consumer payments.

The announcement leaves two practical questions open for customers:

  • What fees apply to card spending, currency conversion, or cash pickup?
  • Which markets follow Colombia, and when does the physical card actually ship?

Why It Matters?

The card changes what a MoneyGram transfer can become after it lands. A recipient in Colombia doesn’t have to collect the full amount in pesos at a counter, because part of it can stay in a dollar balance for phone payments, and the rest can be cashed out later when it’s needed. Receiving and spending now happen in the same account.

MoneyGram’s edge is its physical footprint. Wallet-first products such as Phantom’s crypto debit card depend almost entirely on digital payments, while MoneyGram can back the same kind of stablecoin balance with nearly 500,000 retail locations for cash, which could make a dollar balance usable for customers who still handle much of their spending in cash. Existing MoneyGram app users in Colombia can check whether they’re eligible for the card directly in the app.

Definition of Stablecoin. Link to full glossary entry follows the description.Stablecoin
