The London Stock Exchange (LSE) unveiled plans on July 20, 2026, to launch a separate overnight trading venue in the first half of 2027. The new venue will run from 5 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. London time, initially trading exchange-traded funds rather than individual stocks.

Key Takeaways

  • London Stock Exchange plans a separate overnight venue, launching in the first half of 2027 to extend trading into the evening and early morning.
  • The venue pauses for 30 minutes each evening so staff can complete end-of-day processing before the overnight session begins.
  • Exchange-traded funds tracking UK and US markets launch first. Individual company shares are not part of the initial rollout.
  • Nasdaq, CME Group, and Cboe Global Markets are extending their own trading hours, according to Reuters.
  • CME Group’s 24/7 crypto futures drew over 7,200 contracts, worth roughly $50 million, in their first weekend of trading.

London Stock Exchange Charts a Night Shift

London Stock Exchange (LSE), operator of the United Kingdom’s benchmark share market, plans to launch a separate night-time trading venue in the first half of 2027. The new venue will operate apart from LSE’s main market and initially list exchange-traded products (ETPs), fund-like baskets that track a broad index, similar to ETFs, such as funds tracking the UK or US stock market, rather than individual company shares.

The overnight session runs from 5 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. London time, with a 30-minute pause between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. for end-of-day processing, while the main venue keeps its standard 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. hours.

Today, we announced plans to launch LSE 24, a new 24×5 trading venue to support the next generation of digital, algorithmic and agentic trading.

Why ETPs Come First, Not Shares?

Starting with exchange traded products gives LSE a lower-risk way to test overnight demand. An ETP tracks a broad index rather than a single company, so the exchange does not need a live order book for thousands of individual listed stocks during the new evening-to-morning window. Individual shares would require market makers and surveillance systems watching every listed name around the clock, a heavier lift than supporting a handful of index tracking funds.

London Stock Exchange has leaned on similar logic before. The exchange’s own Main Market statement says its reformed listing rules support the UK’s ability to remain a highly competitive global destination to raise capital, keeping it home to the largest exchange in Europe and one of the leading exchanges globally. Extending trading hours is the same competitiveness push aimed at demand instead of new listings, this time measured against the venues in Crypto Exchanges that already run non-stop.

The 24/7 Race Among Global Exchanges

Nasdaq plans to extend trading to 23 hours on weekdays in December, and London is not alone in redrawing its trading day. Nasdaq’s own Global Trading Hours hub describes a new session operating from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Eastern time that creates a 23-hour trading day, five days a week.

CME Group rolled out 24/7 trading of crypto futures and options in late May, and the launch drew immediate volume. CME Group’s own launch announcement reports more than 7,200 cryptocurrency futures and options contracts, worth roughly $50 million in notional value, traded over its inaugural weekend. Cboe Global Markets plans to launch 23×5 trading of US equities on its EDGX Equities Exchange in December.

Crypto exchanges never had to retrofit continuous trading. That market structure has run non-stop since inception, so the four traditional venues below are building toward the same baseline from a standing start.

Implications for Traditional Markets

The pressure behind all four moves traces back to crypto’s refusal to close. Bitcoin and Ether trade every hour of every day, and tokenized versions of stocks and funds extend that same nonstop model onto assets that used to sit inside a market’s opening and closing bell. A centuries old exchange rewriting its trading day is a concession that the always on clock crypto popularized is now a baseline expectation for global investors, not a habit confined to digital assets.

Overnight trading carries a structural trade off worth naming plainly. Thinner order books outside standard hours typically mean fewer buyers and sellers active at any moment, which can widen the gap between bid and ask prices and make execution less predictable than during the regular session. That is a general feature of extended hours trading, not a forecast for LSE’s venue specifically.

CoinLaw’s Takeaway

This reads as a sequencing decision, not a hedge. Starting with index tracking funds lets LSE run a live overnight session without rebuilding surveillance for every individual listed company on day one, and it gives the exchange a real-world test of demand before it decides whether single stocks follow. The parallel race among Nasdaq, CME Group, and Cboe Global Markets shows this is now an industry baseline rather than one exchange’s experiment, and whichever venue gets the after hours market structure right stands to capture order flow the others are still building toward.

The bigger signal is what an exchange with roots stretching back centuries chose to copy. Crypto markets built continuous trading in because they never had opening bells to begin with. Regulated exchanges are now retrofitting that same expectation onto assets that have closed every evening for generations, a reversal that says more about where investor demand is heading than any single trading hours announcement can. When LSE’s night venue opens in 2027, that reversal becomes something traders can actually use, not just something the industry has talked about.
