# Justin Sun Pushes Tron Quantum Deadline Past Q3 Target

Tron founder Justin Sun said at Bitcoin Asia 2026 in Hong Kong on Aug. 27 that the network will run quantum-resistant technology by year-end, up to three months later than the target he set in April.

## The Big Picture

## Sun sets a year-end date for quantum resistance

Sun spoke at **Bitcoin Asia 2026**, the two-day BTC Inc. conference at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. He said Tron has spent the past year building quantum-resistant solutions and now runs a quantum resistant address system on its testnet.

The date carries weight because Sun already published one. In April he set out a two-stage schedule: a quantum resistant testnet in the second quarter of 2026 and a mainnet rollout in the third. The third quarter closes Sept. 30, so a year-end target pushes the mainnet step past that window by as much as three months.

 ## The default signature runs on an unfinished standard

**TRON Core Devs** enabled two schemes on Nile in build **GreatVoyage-v4.8.2-PQ1-build1: FN\_DSA\_512**, derived from **Falcon-512**, and **ML\_DSA\_44**, derived from Dilithium. Coverage extends to transaction signing, block production signatures from super representatives, handshakes between peer-to-peer nodes, and signature verification inside the TRON Virtual Machine.

Only one of the two rests on finished federal cryptography. The U.S. Commerce Secretary approved ML-DSA as FIPS 204 on **Aug. 13, 2024**, alongside FIPS 203 and FIPS 205. Falcon has no final standard: NIST still lists it as undergoing standardization, and the FIPS 206 draft went in for approval on Aug. 28, 2025.

Tron sets FN\_DSA\_512 as the default key generation scheme and leaves ML\_DSA\_44 optional. The [official developer guide](https://medium.com/tronnetwork/trying-tron-post-quantum-pq-signatures-on-the-testnet-cbf0d4770e1f) states the reason for the work plainly: “**Future quantum computers may be able to break the elliptic-curve signatures (ECDSA) in wide use today.**“

## What the Nile build leaves out?

TRON Core Devs name three gaps in the testnet implementation. **Post-quantum wallets** do not work with [gas-free transfers](https://coinlaw.io/crypto-wallet-ecosystem-statistics/), cannot be restored from BIP-39 mnemonic seed phrases, and have no Ledger hardware wallet integration.

Each gap touches the part of Tron that carries value, starting with gas-free transfers, which move a large share of the network’s USDT. Missing Ledger support keeps post quantum addresses off the hardware that [institutional custody desks holding Tron assets](https://coinlaw.io/anchorage-digital-tron-us-institutional-custody/) rely on. Developers already testing on Nile should note that a wallet created through **RegisterWalletPQ** needs its own backup path, because a seed phrase will not recover it.

The Nile results prove the signature schemes function on a test network. They do not prove mainnet readiness, and no public mainnet committee proposal has surfaced. Four questions stay open:

- **Has a mainnet committee proposal been filed, and when would super representatives vote on it?**
- **Do existing ECDSA addresses migrate, or do both signature types run side by side on mainnet?**
- **Will gas-free transfers, seed phrase recovery, and Ledger support arrive before or after mainnet activation?**
- **How does the network handle the $89 billion in stablecoin supply reported in its [Q2 2026 quarterly report](https://trondao.org/research/tron-q2-2026-quarterly-report) during a migration window?**

## Rival chains reached the same conclusion earlier

Solana got to a post-quantum testnet first. Its work with Project Eleven produced a testnet using post-quantum digital signatures in December 2025, paired with a threat assessment covering validator identities, wallet security, and network signatures. That put [Solana’s quantum security upgrade](https://coinlaw.io/solana-quantum-security-upgrade/) roughly six months ahead of Nile.

Aptos took a different route on the standard itself. Its governance proposal AIP-137 introduced optional quantum-resistant signatures using SLH-DSA, the scheme NIST finalized as FIPS 205. The [Aptos quantum-resistant signature proposal](https://coinlaw.io/aptos-quantum-resistant-signature-proposal/) made protection voluntary at the account level, and it built on cryptography that was already final.

## CoinLaw’s Takeaway

The year-end date says more about governance than about cryptography. Tron’s foundation-led structure lets a committee proposal clear quickly, the contrast Sun draws against [Bitcoin](https://coinlaw.io/bitcoin-statistics/), where he argues miners, exchanges, and wrapped Bitcoin custodians would each need to agree.

That speed is real, but the binding constraint sits elsewhere: Falcon’s federal standard is unfinished, and the testnet build still excludes the transfer type and custody hardware carrying the network’s settlement business.

Peers moved more cautiously on the exact point where Tron moved fastest, with Aptos building on a finalized standard and making adoption optional per account.

Whether Tron’s timing reads as leadership or as shipping ahead of the specification depends on what NIST publishes in FIPS 206 and whether that final text matches what Nile runs today. Any change between draft and final would land on addresses already generated under the draft.
