# Nexo Survey Ties Crypto Wealth Gap to Platform Friction

Nexo published a survey September 23, 2026, finding operational friction, not conviction, is the biggest barrier for high-net-worth investors building crypto wealth. The survey covers the U.S., U.K., and Argentina, and Nexo sells the products it says fix that friction.

## The Brief

- Nexo’s new 1-to-10 Crypto Integration Index (CII) averages just 4.83, even though about 67% of the 1,000 affluent investors surveyed already own crypto.
- Substitution and retirement decisions explain 54.2% of the score’s variation; risk perception explains only 13.6%, according to Nexo’s report, The Future of Digital Wealth 2026.
- Argentina leads crypto ownership at 74% but trails on integration depth; the U.S. trails ownership at 62% but leads integration, per Nexo’s country data.
- Among the most integrated investors, the top-cited friction is security at 36%, not doubts about the asset class, per Nexo’s cohort data.

## A new index measures depth, not just ownership

Nexo built the Crypto Integration Index as a new 1-to-10 measure of how deeply crypto is embedded in an investor’s financial life, beyond ownership. The index combines allocation size, holding horizon, retirement integration, substitution from traditional assets, and risk perception into a single composite score.

[Nexo fielded the survey](https://nexo.com/reports/digital-wealth-survey-2026) in February and March 2026 through the research platform Attest, according to Nexo’s methodology note. It polled 1,000 affluent investors in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Argentina, markets also tracked on [Cryptocurrency Adoption by Country](https://coinlaw.io/cryptocurrency-adoption-by-country-statistics/). Respondents needed a minimum of $100,000 in liquid assets in the U.S. and U.K., or $40,000 in Argentina to qualify.

The gap between owning and building is stark. Two-thirds of affluent investors surveyed, about 67%, already hold crypto. Yet the average CII score is just **4.83**.

That gap is not about belief.

Just under 20% of respondents already expect crypto to be their number-one wealth driver over the next decade, ahead of salary and equities.

## Ownership and integration move in opposite directions

Argentina leads on ownership at **74%** but trails on integration depth, with a **CII of 4.62**. The U.S. has the lowest ownership, at 62%, but the deepest integration, at CII 5.07. The U.K. sits in between, at CII 4.75 with 65% ownership. The pattern shows ownership rates vary sharply by market without moving in lockstep with usage depth.

Argentina’s ownership likely reflects a cash hedge against currency erosion, a use case that drives fast adoption but not automatic retirement planning. The U.S. figure looks different: crypto there competes against equities and[ 401(k) allocations](https://coinlaw.io/trump-crypto-private-equity-401k-order/), a harder bar that produces deeper integration once crossed.

## Risk perception is not the real barrier

Risk perception explains only 13.6% of the survey’s CII variation, the report’s sharpest break from the standard adoption survey. Substitution and retirement decisions alone account for 54.2% of that variation.

Iliya Kalchev, analyst at Nexo said:

“

Risk perception used to be the story in every crypto adoption survey. It isn’t anymore

An investor who already holds crypto still needs it to behave like the rest of a portfolio. The report says long-horizon holders need a trusted platform, a way to earn while holding, and liquidity without a forced sale.

## Young holders own the most and integrate the least

Integration peaks at ages 35 to 44, where **28%** of holders treat crypto as a core retirement asset, the highest of any age group. That share falls to 7.9% by age 55 and older.

Younger investors sit at the opposite extreme. 94.2% of young investors own crypto, and 30.8% name it their primary expected wealth driver, the highest conviction of any age group. Yet only 2.0% hold it with a 10-year-plus horizon. The cohort with the strongest belief in crypto has the least capital and time to act on it.

## At the top of the scale, the friction turns operational

Among “**Structurally Integrated**” investors, CII 7 or higher, friction shifts toward platform trust. Security concerns lead at **36%**, then high fees at 34%, then platform complexity at 28%. That band is small.

A score of 7 or higher is reached by just 4.7% of investors surveyed.

Nexo US COO **Neil Steinhardt** frames the finding as validation for the platform’s roadmap:

“

That’s the gap between owning crypto and actually building wealth with it, and it’s exactly where our platform is designed to meet investors.

Neil SteinhardtCOO – Nexo US

That line is also the report’s clearest disclosure of interest. Nexo designed the survey, built the index, and its U.S. COO named the remaining barriers: security, fees, and platform user-friendliness and capabilities. He says Nexo has spent years building to solve exactly those.

The numbers may hold up on their own; readers should still weigh the finding and the pitch separately.
