The US Treasury Department is investigating illegal applications of Bitcoin, revealed to the department’s Secretary Steven Mnuchin during an interview with Yahoo Finance. The investigation is targeting the most popular digital token’s use for “unlawful purposes.”

According to Mnuchin, the investigation is to make sure that Bitcoin is not used to finance illicit activities on the Dark Web.

“We want to make sure that you don’t have the dark web funded in Bitcoins. And that’s something that is a concern of ours today,” he said and added that Bitcoin and the surrounding issues are also a part of an ongoing discussion between the Treasury Department and its international counterparts.
