Bitcoin confirmed exempt from VAT in Spain

Europe Spain

Based on the interpretation of EU VAT Directive 2006/112/CE recognizing bitcoin as “financial service”, the cryptocurrency has been exempt from VAT in Spain.

According to a spokesman from the Ministerio de Hacienda – Spanish tax office – Bitcoin has always been VAT-free but its status has now been clarified.

As bitcoin transfers are considered “special risk” activities, anti-money laundering regulons still apply to digital currency transaction.
